Unless the copper strip the pad is made of is severely corroded or bent so bad it can't be used, Echoplex pressure pads can be refurbished to like new status. All EP-3's and EP-4's use a pressure pad, and some of the later models of the EP-2 used one. My EP-2 doesn't seem to have had one. Not sure of the EP-1 but I don't think they used them either.

Here is what you will need:
  • Sharp scissors
  • Felt
  • Super glue, use the gel kind
  • Goof Off or something similar
  • Razor blade or razor knife

About the type of felt used, the first time I did this a year or so ago I used felt from a piece of weatherstripping I got at Home Depot. When I looked around my shop it was gone so I must have tossed it. I went back to HD but it seems that most weatherstripping is now made of foam. What little felt weatherstrip they did have was inadequate for this project. Other hardware stores and Lowes were also devoid of what I needed. After much Googling I found an online hardware store called Drillspot that had different kinds of felt that would work. I bought two different kinds, but they are more or less the same thing. The part numbers are 2FJX6, and 2HVC2. At 1/4" x 2" x 60" one of these is enough for a lifetime, and the prices are cheap. One of these is wool, and the other is synthetic. The wool has a peel and stick backing but I would still use super glue to attach it. We will use the white synthetic for this demonstration.

So here is how:

Supplies and a few pads that need repair
Scrape off the old pad with the razor blade. Be careful not to nick the soft copper. The pic is a little blurry here, sorry.
Here is the result, it's ok if there is some residue.
Use a rag and the Goof Off to clean the remaining pad residue from the copper.
Now prepare the pad. The dimensions should be 1/4" x 5/16" x 3/4". Use sharp scissors and make clean, straight cuts.
And here is our new pressure pad.
Spread the gel super glue evenly over the copper strip and carefully attach the pad. The copper strip is 1/4" wide and that is the side of the felt you should attach.  Let it sit for an hour or so or even overnight before reinstalling it on your Echoplex.
